What material are most prom dresses made of?

This year, I'm thinking about making my own prom dress. I'm not exactly sure what kind of material they're mostly made of. Is it silk? Or a synthetic material? Thanks in advance<3 I'm a pretty darn good seamstress, if I do say so myself. I'm not worried about the difficulty.
