Opinions on short prom dresses as opposed to the traditional long ones?

I found this really cute prom dress that I'm planning to get for my formal but it's pretty short, above the knees for the model. As I'm short (5'2) this would be below or on my knees. Just wanted to know what are your opinions on short prom dresses. Does it seem to casual, despite the style? Did a lot of people wear short dresses, or long (as in ground sweeping dresses) ones, short and tall?

1. most people do think that long dresses are better for prom, but honestly short is way better. other than the fact that more people wear short dresses now a days, they are also easier to dance with, keep you cool, and don't look like you're trying too hard. go short.
2. It's okay. As long as you like it! I personally prefer long dresses but there are people who wear short ones!
3. I wore a short dress to my prom, definitely above knee, but it didn't look tacky because it didn't have a low neck and was more of a shift dress. I think most people who wore short dresses looked better, as many of the long dresses were some sort of synthetic satin and looked quite cheap. That said, some long dresses looked nice, they were generally more Grecian style (flowing fabrics). I don't think short dresses are too casual, it will be dressed up by wearing heels, and you could always wear some sort of hair piece to make it slightly more formal like I did. Shorter dresses are also more practical, when the people in long dresses were sweeping around I couldn't help but think it looked quite uncomfortable and a bit annoying in comparison to a short dress.
4. If you like it than that is what matters. Traditionally longer prom dresses are worn, however short dresses are easier to dance in. You can use accessories to add some interest to your outfit or you can wear really cute shoes. I even read an article in the newspaper last spring about how short prom dresses are more popular now (especially because of films like HSM 3 where the girls all wore shorter dresses). 6. it really depends on what you like . people think long dresses are more appropriate for high school prom because its more formal . but if you fall in love with a short dress then get it ! not all long dresses are pretty . some short are much better looking then long ones . it just matters on how you feel your going to look . and if you feel incredible in a short one then so be it (;
